The current structure of agriculture, including disconnect between landownership and large-scale farm operations, does not lend it’s self to the transitions of acres into organic projections and the stewardship of organic acres.
It takes three years to transition acres into organic production. Most large farmers lease the majority of their acres on one to three year lease contracts. Making the investment, and commitment, to transition acres to organic is not practical given the disconnect between land owners and farmers. At Gård, where the landowners are part of the farming cooperative, a commitment to organic production is possible.
